Jagriti COVID-19 Response

The recent COVID crisis has impacted communities globally in unimaginable ways. From the immediate healthcare crisis to the imminent economic impact, we are slowly seeing it unfolding before us. This is the time when the communities need to be supported so that they emerge stronger and resilient out of this COVID crisis, and are better prepared to navigate in the post-COVID world.

In the context of Eastern Uttar Pradesh (Purvanchal) where Jagriti has been working for the last 20 years, the severity of the problem is accentuated by the fact that the migrant laborers are returning to the region without any sight of income opportunities, and by the fact that the MSMEs are in decline, leading to a large-scale destruction of livelihoods.

Given the urgency of the situation, Jagriti is working on two fronts:

  1. Health Recovery – Immediate COVID awareness, medical supplies of PPE kits, and relief work.
  2. Economic Recovery – Women-based microenterprises / livelihood programs involving SHGs; and Revival of Medium-scale enterprises through digital methods.
Jagriti seeks to impact 7 districts – Deoria, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ballia, Mau, and Maharajgunj – with a total population of more than 20 million through its COVID relief work.

We have a three-pronged strategy to undertake the above:

  1. Immediate awareness on preventive measures, medical supplies of PPE kits, and relief work: Use an awareness program for COVID using digital methods of the Internet Saathi program; train women groups to manufacture PPE Kit; and supply essentials to vulnerable communities like migrant labors and daily wage workers
  2. Women-based Microenterprises and livelihood programs, involving SHGs: Look at other forms of enterprise support for SHG groups coming out of the women network, micro-enterprises including Kirana Stores (estimated at 20,000), PDS outlets, potentially SHG groups to create a "floor for supporting livelihoods"
  3. Prevent decline of SME Enterprises: Identify local enterprises in the 7 adjoining districts (estimated at 1,500) and support them to survive the economic downturn

While we have raised funds and provided ration and supplies to those who have expressed the need for it, we are now raising funds to scale up capabilities across the region by reaching out to more families in need.

As India fights and tries to mitigate the unprecedented consequences of the pandemic, we request you to support our cause by donating. The donors will get an 80G tax exemption certificate and monthly reports from us.

Funds will be used for the following:

  • Food and ration supply: We are preparing kits of essentials (grocery and hygiene kit) for distribution amongst the families of migrants, daily wage workers, and other vulnerable members of the society. The kit will comprise of essentials - 6 masks, 5 hand soaps, 2 kg potato, 2 kg onion, 5 kg flour, 5 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1-litre mustard oil, 1 kg sugar, and spices – needed for the next 15 days.
  • PPE Kit Manufacturing: Our groups of women, on request of local district administration, are now producing the PPE kit for the frontline health workers and health professionals. There is a huge requirement of around 15 Lakhs masks only for a district like Deoria.
  • Awareness on preventive measures: Jagriti has a group of 2000 digitally trained women with smartphones and data connectivity. We are training them to spread awareness through audio-visual content in regional language in the 7 districts and beyond. Post the lockdown, they will be doing village-to-village campaigns to further spread awareness.
  • We accept donations from foreign nationals as well.
